The Basics

Brera is one of the most fashionable neighborhoods in Milan for a before-dinner aperitivo and a great place to experience Milan’s excellent food and wine scene, so consider joining a small-group food tour or wine tasting. Food walking tours are also available in Brera.

In addition to strolling through Brera and enjoying the scene, you can visit the neighborhood’s main attraction: the famous Brera Art Gallery (Pinacoteca di Brera), one of Italy’s most important museums, with works by Botticelli, Raphael, Hayez, Titian, Caravaggio, Tintoretto, Piero della Francesca, Rembrandt, Rubens, and Andrea Mantegna. The designer shopping district Quadrilatero d’Oro, where the elegant Milanese head to update their wardrobes, is also nearby.

Milan Food Walking Tour of Brera
We had a great morning touring the Brera area and sampling delicious specialties of Milan. Our guide, Veronica, was very knowledgeable and friendly. My advice to others is to come to this tour with an appetite, as there was an abundance of food tastings throughout the morning.

Brera district & Pinacoteca 2-hours guided experience with entrance tickets included
We purchased this tour through Viator to have a better experience on a visit to Pinacoteca museum. Out tour guide gave us a brief tour on Brera district, and guides arts in the museum. She was very knowledgeable and explained clearly. Especially she took time to go through all of the must-see art pieces in depth. She made our museum visit wonderful. We definitely recommend anyone to hire Viator.

Brera district & Pinacoteca 2-hours guided experience with entrance tickets included
Our guide(Fatima?) was very knowledgeable and friendly. She met us promptly, there were just the 2 of us. The Brera Gallery is a Wonderful place to study the various art forms throughout history. Our guide took us through the Early Christian and Medieval periods right up to the 20th century. She gave her presentation with regard to items we were most interested in seeing. Caravaggio painting for my wife, for example. The Brera District tour was interesting as well.

Food Tour of Brera
Great tour with a knowledgeable guide and good food. Be aware though that the tour covers more than the Brera district and more town history than food facts. We were however quite full and content after the tour.

Food Tour of Brera
Our tour guide was very knowledgable about the architectural area. Not exactly a complete tour, one of the best part was at the end when we got to a guided tour our Eataly where we tried the best pistachio gelato.

Milan Food Walking Tour of Brera
This was a very good experience. The selection of foods and stores were both interesting and of very high quality. The tour guide was very good but not quite as good as a tour guide we have had in Paris. I would strongly recommend the tour and feel we did have a very good experience. The Brera district is beautiful and is a good place to experience food.

Milan Food Walking Tour of Brera
The guide on this walking tour of Milan was excellent. The pace was easy and we enjoyed learning about the art district. We had tastes of various foods, loved the lasagna, and wine tasting was interesting. We ended up purchasing wine. Would highly recommend the tour.

When to Get There

The Brera neighborhood is most vibrant in summer, when cafés spill onto the sidewalks and make for an excellent place to do some serious people-watching. During the day, the main attractions are the area’s boutiques and museum; by night, most gather here for a drink or meal.

Milan Food Tours

The cosmopolitan city of Milan may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about Italian cuisine. So it may be surprising to discover that the city is known both for its fashion and its food, with a variety of traditional dishes rooted in the area’s history and a thriving up-and-coming contemporary food scene, especially in Brera. Consider taking a food-themed walking tour through the neighborhood to experience the city’s gourmet side for yourself.
