The Basics

One of America’s first highways, Route 66 is rife with culture, views, and history. With such a long length, there are numerous ways to experience a slice of Route 66 from any number of the states it passes through—Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Drive along Route 66 to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park and catch the views on guided day trip, or step into the Wild West at some of Arizona’s ghost towns. Pass through the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, tour the Cahokia Mounds of Collinsville, explore Downtown Albuquerque, and play on the pier in Los Angeles; the options are endless.

A Driver, but no Guide?
SUSAN_H, May 2021

This tour is well-planned and -organized, but ... our guide, Anthony, was very polite and a good driver but he had absolutely NOTHING to say about the scenery or the things that we passed on the road. This is a 14-hour tour, so he could have made more of an effort to be a “guide” vs. “driver”. Also, we were taken to a questionable Subway for lunch ... two of the 5 guests had bad tummies from the meat in the sandwiches.

Adam was an excellent tour guide and gave interesting information about the area! Adam was personable, polite, and encouraged us to engage in the experience! Thanks for a great time as we celebrated our wedding anniversary.

Anthony was the absolute best. We meet 2 other couples and will maintain contact with them. The weather was cold and cloudy, but one of the best trips we have ever been on. If we get back to vegas/the grand canyon we will request another trip with Anthony.

Having our guide lead us to the railing with our eyes closed and recording our first response to God’s majestic creation! She was so personable and genuine. Very informative trip and not boring by any means. Definitely recommend this tour...even though it was a long day it was so worth going.

This was an excellent trip, the van was clean, spacious and very comfortable, the guide was kind, polite and knowledgeable. The trip was efficient but not hurried. There was lots of adventure, snacks and frequent stops. there was ample time allowed to enjoy the Canyon and the many other areas for picture taking . It was a good value for the money spent

Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, & Route 66

Grand Canyon National Park, Hoover Dam and Route 66 Small Group from Las Vegas
Our tour was amazing. It was a small group and there were 7 of us in total. We ended up having an extra stop at Lake Mead before heading to Hoover Dam. We were at the Grand Canyon for about 3 hours. We did the rim to rim trail starting at Mather Point. Our guide Scott was amazing and went above and beyond to accomodate us and made sure we got pictures in every location we went to. The day was not too hot and windy with blue skies which made it even better. We loved our whole day there! And I was able to get most of my stamps in my National Park Passport book.

A great Day trip

We wanted to get out of town into the outdoors. Some had seen the Hoover Dam/Grand Canyon but never together. This group option was great for us, we had our private van and we could spend more or less time where we wanted. Lots of smiles for the miles. Our guide Ita was a great guide, driver and photographer. We are so happy we booked this tour with Viator.

Grand Canyon, Hoover dam, Route 66

Mel was super nice and patient with us! Provided some very good info especially at Seligman, AZ. Being a Route 66 fan I really enjoyed the stop at Seliggman. The van could have been a little more comfortable; I could have benefited from a little more leg room; temp in van was comfortable-not too cold, not warm at all. Had a great time! Disappointed not to actually SEE Hoover dam

Even More Amazing Than We Imagined

Our guide was so great. Very knowledgeable and fun to talk to. It’s a lot of driving and he made sure to make some fun spots and ensure we were always comfortable. I would and will recommend this tour and this company!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Some modern maps don’t show Route 66, but detailed directions are available online.

  • Route 66 begins in Chicago and ends in Santa Monica, California, but only segments of the original road remain.

  • Fuel up often along the road, especially in western states like Arizona where gas stations can be scarce.

  • Don’t forget sunglasses; the east-west orientation of Route 66 means you’ll likely be driving into the rising or setting sun at some point.

How to Get There

Old Route 66 passes through eight different states; the segments that remain in each state are often well marked with Historic Route 66 signage. Road tripping is by far the most popular way to experience the route.

When to Get There

The best time to visit Route 66 depends largely on which section you’ll be visiting. Spring and autumn are both good times to experience the entirety of the road. Expect high summer temperatures in the West and icy winter conditions along the road’s eastern expanse.

Time Allowance on America’s Mother Road

With so much to see and do along Route 66, trip length can vary greatly. A good rule of thumb is to allow at least seven days one-way, and add extra days in destinations you might want to explore in-depth on side trips from the road.
