Situated just across the Venetian Lagoon from Venice, the lovely islands of Murano and Burano are world-renowned for their traditional artisan crafts. You’ll meet up with your guide in central Venice for the short boat ride to Murano, a picturesque grouping of islands that has been home to some of the world’s finest artisan glassblowers since the 13th century.

Visit the workshop of a local glassblower to watch delicate forms take shape from molten glass through a combination of rolling, shaping with iron tools and blowing through a long metal tube. Learn tricks of the trade, like how minerals are added to give the candy-colored vases and chandeliers of Murano their vibrant hue. Enjoy some free time on the island to explore other workshops and perhaps pick up a souvenir to take home.

Hop back on the boat for the scenic ride to Burano, where traditional lacemaking workshops are scattered among the island’s brightly colored homes. Learn about the history of Burano lace and how it was once sought after by monarchs across Europe for its exquisite quality. You’ll get a chance to watch local craftswomen creating lace through a series of finely detailed weaving and stitching, carrying on a tradition that has thrived here for centuries.

If you like, visit the Burano Lace Museum on your own to delve even deeper into the history of this elegant craft. Enjoy free time to explore the island and peruse local shops before the return boat trip to Venice.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Isola di Murano
The enchanting islands of Murano and Burano are the perfect change of pace from Venice’s crowded streets and waterways. And the perfect way to reach them is by private water taxi. Faster and sturdier than a gondola, nimbler and less crowded than a waterbus, water taxis are the premier way to travel in Venice. Few visitors get to experience them, but yours is included, along with an expert local guide who’ll explain Venice’s history as a titan of trade along the way. Your first port of call is a specially chosen glassblowing workshop on Murano. In the Middle Ages, only Murano’s artisans possessed the secrets of this craft, and sharing them was punishable by execution. You’ll get to witness modern glassblowers wield those once secret techniques, shaping delicate and dazzling works of art from molten glass. Then admire the workshop’s finest work in its gallery, and perhaps take home a piece of your own – with a tour discount. Or explore more of Murano, including its peaceful canals and stunning Byzantine church.
Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes

Stop At:
Burano
The locals of nearby Burano still maintain the island’s tradition of handmade lace, some of the finest anywhere in the world. You’ll get to observe lace being hand-stitched the way it has been for generations. Then visit the lace museum to see the island’s greatest work, or simply enjoy the photo opportunity provided by the colorful houses, brightly painted so sailors could see home as they returned from the sea. When you cross the lagoon back to Venice, you’ll have a renewed appreciation of the crafts that put the city on the map so long ago.

Meh... Barely worth the money
Benjamin_S
, Jul 2022
It was with the money. If you come to Venice you have to visit Murano and Burano. They were two key artisanal locations embedded in the culture of Venice. This trip checked those boxes. There is no wow factor with this company though. The guide was bland and kind of boring. She knew a lot and was local but she didn't seem to like her job much. She couldn't wait to get the your over. She did the minumum she had to. The glass factory was a short demo and insanely over priced discounts. Oh and don't be fooled by the discounts, they only apply to glass over $1000. The cheaper stuff is full price. I think the combination of glass and lace factory demoes was about 10 min ALL together. The rest of the time was transit and shopping time. The guide only talked while on the boat. At each island she did nothing but guide us to each factory and tell us where to meet after we shopped.

This is an excellent tour to see Murano and Burano. It was enough time to get a great feel for the islands but to also see what needed to be seen. The tour guide provided information on the area and history nonstop which was excellent. Highly recommend.

Our guide was fantastic! Funny, interesting and full of information. Loves the learning about everything and seeing the quieter side of Venice. Loved hearing about the other islands we passed on the journey as well. Thank you!

Boat tour of the islands is a delight!

What a wonderful way to spend our first afternoon in Venice! We landed in the morning, dropped our bags at the hotel, and immediately headed out for this tour. Being out on the water was so nice after sitting on the airplane all night! I had been to Murano before, but this was my first time in Burano and it was wonderful! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. She was full of historical information but also local info as well. A boat tour was definitely the way to go--so refreshing and fun!

Christia. B the guide was lovely and fantastic. She was knowledgeable and I loved her beautiful Italian accent and explanation of the history of Venice and the surrounding islands. The tour could be more detailed, we did not see much of either of the islands except a glimpse of it. If you want to explore more, do a 1-1 or a self tour.

Great way to visit Murano and Burano with a friendly and knowledgeable guide. It was nice to have a boat just for our group. The only disappointment was the group was not small - over 40 people. Still enjoyed the experience but not what we were expecting.

Enclosed boat with no air circulation. There was no way to move on the boat to get any air either. Very hot outside and we live in the desert in arizona where it is 46c so we are accustomed to heat.

Alessandra was an excellent guide. She told us very engaging and personal stories that made the otherwise boring boat ride, fun. She told us many interesting facts and gave visual examples to make sure everybody understood.

Murano and Burano Island excursion

We had a great time on this trip out to the Islands from Venice. Our Guide Francesca B. was able to transition easily and quickly from English to French (unexpectedly, two people in the group of about 16 spoke French instead of English) while she explained all about the history of various sites on the boat ride out to Murano and Burano. We started with a glass factory tour complete with a demonstration by a master artist. Then we went to the second Island where we were able to see lace being made by hand. We also stopped for lunch on the second island. Then a return boat ride to Venice. This was a great half-day trip out from Venice. These Islands were less crowded than Venice. I would definitely recommend going.
